While the majority of competitors have praised the Beijing Olympic facilities, French snowboarder Chloe Trespeuch has voiced regret that all contests are taking place on artificial snow. There will be no natural snow at the Yanqing site, which will host the Alpine skiing events, or the Zhangjiakou zone, which will host the biathlon and snowboard sports. “I’m a little upset that they chose a location that isn’t necessarily suited to the practise of winter sports and that it was required to alter it rather than move to an adapted location,” Trespeuch, who co-founded the pro-environment group Ecoglobe last year, told reporters on Thursday.
While Trespeuch, the world number two, stated that it would not preclude her from competing in snowboard cross events, she expressed her willingness for athletes to have a say in future decisions.
“I hope we all talk about it and realize we’re not comfortable with the detrimental influence on nature, and that the following events will be more nature-friendly,” she says “she stated
“We need to talk about it, and we athletes need to show that putting nature at the center of the initiative is critical.”
