Which Havells Business strategies made them successful?
The idea behind Mamaearth
In September 2016, Ghazal Alagh and Varun Alagh founded Mamaearth, a skincare brand that specializes in natural and toxin-free skincare products. Based in Gurugram, India, Mamaearth is a big name in the cosmetics industry of India for its online platform that sells natural and toxin-free skincare products.
As the mother of a young boy, Ghazal Alagh describes the pressure she faces to do the right thing for him and how lax regulations in the country when it comes to infant products frustrated her. After complaining about this to her husband, Varun, the two came up with the idea for the company.
In addition, Varun also described how having the desire to start their own business had been there for quite a while, and he started to worry that life was passing him by and he would have regrets. Once they had experience and a purpose, they made the decision to start Mama Earth, “We owe it to ourselves to at least try,” said Varun.
Strategies used by Ghazal Alagh to make Mamaearth successful
Do you ever think about a company that started five years ago that can beat big brands like Dabur, Johnson & Johnson, HUL?
What is so special about Mamaearth?
A product that started with only six products has now more than 200 products on the market. The question is how Mamaearth did this?
For they analysed the consumer behaviour chart, which has all these contents:-
- Age and gender
- Consumer education – How much do consumers know about the product?
- Spending capacity – How much consumers can spend on products?
- Availability – Is the product available where the consumer lives or not?
And the biggest difference between foreign baby care products and Indian products in – Foreign brand products were toxin-free, which means they didn’t include any chemical or ingredient in their product that produced toxins on the baby’s skin. According to Ghazal Alagh, there are more than 1500 banned ingredients in baby care products in foreign countries, but in India, there are no such regulations. When doing customer profiling, Ghazal found that 95% of the people buying baby products were mothers. However, they lack knowledge about which products should be used on a baby’s skin, which is not, which products are good for their baby and which are harmful.
So to solve this problem Ghazal Alagh started talking to many baby care product manufacturers. And asked them if they can make toxin-free baby care products? The response was the same from everyone, that they can make such types of products but no one is making them in India currently. And from here Mamaearth’s journey accelerated.

They started with six baby care products and launched them in the market. In the beginning days, they distributed them to their friends and relatives and asked them for reviews. She told them, ” Use these products and tell us what’s lacking in them, what things we can improve.” Are these products suitable for your kids or not?
And by taking the feedback of people Gazal Alagh made the improvements according to the reviews. But at the same time, a question was raised among the people, “what’s special about your product that we should buy? ”? Because at that time Dabur, HUL, Johson & Johnson, these brands were ruling the market. And why should people trust Mamaearth? Just to resolve this problem, Mamaearth came up with a solution – they collaborated with MadeSafe, a U.S. non-profitable company. MadeSafe does safety testing of healthcare and beauty products and Mamaearth is Asia’s first and only brand that has MadeSafe certification.
MadeSafe made the work of Mamaearth easier. But still, there was a big problem, they got MadeSafe certification but many moms didn’t know whether the product they are using on their children is harmful or not.
The situation was such that when Ghazal told people that my products are Sulphate free, people used to ask her ” what’s free with your product”? To tackle this problem, Ghazal started educating their old customers. Most of Mamaearth’s old customers were ladies and we know-how ladies are. If a lady knows about a thing that no one knows in her friend circle, she proudly shares that information.
The things Mamaearth was telling in the market were what’s good for kids and what not, many ladies didn’t know about it. When one lady used to know this, she happily shared it with her group. This thing kept increasing day by day and Mamaearth became very popular among ladies. Then Mamaearth raised some funding and then by using digital marketing and influencer marketing started capturing the market.
But still, the question is, without any business experience or business background, how did Ghazal Alagh do this thing? See those people who have used Mamaearth products would be knowing that, Mamaearth’s products are more expensive than the normal products, most of the Mamaearth products come in the premium category.
The question is how this brand is successful in a country that is price sensitive? The answer is Consumer insights and personalism. If you see any beauty product as you would find one thing in common. The common thing is that it’s all about you. In any beauty care ad, any brand will not talk about the product they will always talk about you.
Do you know why? Because beauty care products are always personal. And so most of the ads are made to target your self-esteem or your self insecurities.
The psychology of Indian moms is set such that they would always think about family and kids first than themselves. And due to this reason kid’s Horlicks is a hit and Women’s Horlicks is a fail.
Ghazal’s team gathered more than 700 opinions and insights from the female population, took feedback, made improvements, and kept going, launching products that moms can blindly rely on. And when Mamaearth developed products based on these product insights that sent a message to the marketplace that women are part of the process and have a say in the outcome. And then sales of Mamaearth skyrocketed. And ladies didn’t care about the cost. They are more expensive than normal products or not.

Ghazal Alagh on Shark Tank India
Ghazal Alagh of MamaEarth shared her experience on Shark Tank India, which ended earlier this month. During a recent interview with Raj Shamani, who hosts the YouTube talk show Figuring Out, Ghazal said, “On the show, you commit and make a deal with that person, and until there is no major disconnect in what is being claimed, the deal stays as it is.”
Nevertheless, she also spoke about certain businesses that she invested in but turned out to have horrible products. She said, “There have been times when you loved their products, but when you went home and checked those products on Amazon, you went like, ‘Oh my God!'” What do you do now?’ but you can’t then go back, right? As long as the data they shared was accurate, now if your product doesn’t have a good rating, then it’s your responsibility. Things like that have happened before.”
So what does she do in that situation? In the interview, Ghazal said she tells the entrepreneurs to fix their products: “With all the promises we have made on the show, in terms of helping everybody take their brand forward, to scale and everything, that’s what you do. Invest time and tell them what to do.”

Gazal also said, “The worst part is when they shoot your stills. They don’t require you to use your brain, they just ask you to pose.” Other than that, she said she had a fantastic time on the show, especially backstage. “Besides that, it’s a pretty interesting show, I love being there, even though I was on for a very short period of time, since I’m pregnant, but I gave them around eight days (eight episodes),” she said but the overall experience was very good. Especially when the sharks were squabbling backstage, we found it highly entertaining,” she said.
