The Business model of Dream11
Sports startup Dream 11 is a platform where sports enthusiasts show off their love, their passion and their knowledge regarding their favourite sport by establishing their team from the available players during a given match. The users create the best team possible given their preferences.
The Dream11 match allows users to face off with other users who have created teams. During the match, each player is awarded points based on their performance in the real game. In the end, the user with the most points will win the most money. The app requires the user to pay a fixed fee to compete against other users, Only a specific number of users are allowed in each league, and the fee is the same for each user.
Users do not always win the prize money; rather, the person with the highest points wins the prize money, and the amount of prize money is reduced based on the ranking. All the users in Dream 11 contribute more than the total prize money distributed among the winners, and the remaining money is collected by Dream 11. The entry fee is usually around Rs75, and there is a total prize pool of Rs3 lakh. There are 26 winners from the 5333 entries, and the money is distributed to 2400 users.
The revenue model of Dream11
The fantasy gaming platform Dream11 offers fantasy sports games for numerous sports including cricket, football, basketball, kabaddi, ice hockey, volleyball, handball, and baseball. It is an online game where users build a virtual team based on real-life players and collect points based on their performances in reality.
Those who score the maximum points across their several contests on the site are ranked at the top of the leaderboard. Dream11 offers both free and paid contests. The user has to pay a particular fee to participate and can win real cash.
Dream11 only allows users 18 and older to participate. Their profile must also be verified with their PAN.
With its business model, it wouldn’t be possible to make the first coin of profit without at least some million users.
Dream11 has millions of fantasy cricketers playing every single day, so it is impossible to predict the exact amount Dream11 earns each day, but based on several teams, winning amounts, and entry fees, a lump sum can be calculated.
Every day Dream11 launches 15-17 contests with high value and 20-30 contests with low value, with winning amounts ranging from INR.3 Crore to as low as INR.5,000(US$75).
There are 100s of head-to-head and private contests not included in this list. If all results are added together, Dream11 would earn between INR.4-6 Crores (US$6,00,000-9,00,000) from each match.
This could vary based on popularity and fan base of playing teams and countries.
Dream11 is also allowing other fans of football and basketball, who follow sports other than cricket, to make their dream team and experience the thrill of fantasy sports in the same way they follow real sports.
In addition to this, fantasy sports business models can be applied to all sports that exist worldwide, each of which has variations and separate rules.
Partnerships
Dream11 teamed up with three leagues: cricket, football, and basketball. The company became the official fantasy partner of the Indian Super League, the Caribbean Premier League, and the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The NBA followed with its own fantasy basketball game in association with Dream11 and launched its own official fantasy basketball game on Dream11. They partnered with the Indian Super League later in the year as their official Fantasy Football Partner. In November 2017, the NBA and Dream11 released an official fantasy basketball game.
In the year 2018, Dream11 announced its partnership with the International Cricket Council, the Pro Kabaddi League, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), WBBL and BBL. Through the above partnerships, Dream11 launched two new sports on their platform, including kabaddi and hockey.
On October 31, 2019, the New Zealand Cricket board (NZC) announced that Dream11 would be the title sponsor for the Super Smash home Twenty20 competition. In January 2021, this partnership was extended for six more years until 2026.
Following Vivo’s withdrawal from the 2020 Indian Premier League, Dream11 won the title sponsorship rights for the season for Rs 2.22 billion on 18 August 2020.
